Silent Sound

I am thinking about the sounds in Iceland. The only ones I really recall were the wind and water. Our first stop in Iceland after leaving the airport was Viking World, a viking ship museum that also happened to serve a delicious traditional breakfast- very welcome after our red eye flight from Boston to Keflavik. The wind was blowing 60 mph that day- and the temp was only about 33º F. I took this video from inside because it was just too cold to go out… which for some reason I am unable to post. If you want to see it- it’s very short, 35 seconds!- just click on this link… Sorry about that!

I started this post at least two weeks ago… Since then my back went out and I got hit with a terrible bout of vertigo that took about 3 days to get under control. So now I’m finally back.

There is so much that goes through my mind every day that I want to share. I don’t seem to get to a fraction of it! Right in this moment I am sitting at my living room table captivated by the music of Max Richter. It has been playing for hours and has held me in a sense of inner stillness. I watched the movie The Arrival yesterday, for the 3rd time. I am in love with it- entranced by the melding of the visual representation of sound, words and mathematics with the urgent need for clear communication and understanding. Also the concept of time and no-time. But what really pulls it all together for me is the piece by Max Richter that is played in the beginning and the end of the movie, On The Nature of Daylight, the most beautiful and poignant set of parentheses.

And, if you love that, another I had never heard until tonight… so beautiful.
